There has been a pub of this name in the area since at least 1871. The original building being converted into a private house between WWI and WWII.
The current pub was built in its present location in the 1930's, to replace it.
The design is Neo Tudor, with decorative timber framing to the upper floors and gables.
It is listed by Chelmsford City Council, in the Register of Buildings of local value in Chelmsford.
