Zion Methodist Church
Across the street from a nearly 200 old cemetery in the sleepy Hamlet of West Walworth, lies an old cobblestone church.

The stone building was originally built for the purpose of a school in 1842. Cobblestones were hauled from Lake Ontario by horse and wagon, one load at a time. The stones would have been sorted by size and color, traditionally by volunteers in what they called a "sorting bee". A mason would have been hired to make a soft lime mortar and lay the stones.
The building had only been used as a school for a few years due to insufficient financial support. Then Mr. DeLong, the village shoemaker, rented it for a residence. Then the building was bought for a church: a few repairs were necessary to put it in shape. Blocks of wood and hemlock planks were used for seats. The dedication was held Sept. 9 1866.
Over the years the church underwent many changes. The building grew with extensive additions and stained glass windows were added. There were barns in the back for horses up until the late 1920's when automobiles
became standard and the stables were no longer needed. The building was fitted for gas lighting then again for electricity. Forced air heating was added as the church members worked to maintain and improve their meeting house. The world was constantly changing inside and outside of the thick stone walls, and the church grew with the times.
What to look for
There is no physical container at the posted coordinates. Instead, look around at the front of the church. The stained glass windows are especially nice.
You will need the name of the Pastor. Enter his name into the Certitude link below (only letters, no periods) and you will be rewarded with coordinates and to the geocache. Enter the coordinates you receive into your GPS or phone app and take a short drive to find a 30 cal ammo container.
Depending on the time of year and weather conditions, this cache can be a walk in the park or a muddy trek. Rubber boots are recommended during wet times of the year.
