Please join us on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2023 at Shaker Village for a CITO event of the River Road Trail. We will park and meet at 9:00 a.m. at the given coordinates and at that time will pass out waiver forms for those participating in the clean-up. After a short safety briefing we will begin the task of picking up litter along the River Road Trail. This is about a 3 mile round trip hike. Be sure to bring your own gloves and dress accordingly for the weather. Bottled water, snacks, safety vests and trash bags will be provided. If you cannot make it there by 9:00 a.m. feel free to join us and pitch in as soon as you can.
The paved road in the area was originally built by the Shakers in 1826 with no cars allowed today. It descends 400 feet through rock formations that are between 400 and 500 million years old. Shaker Landing provides one of the few public access points to the sweeping Kentucky River Palisades, with steep, scenic gorges and limestone outcroppings that stretch for miles. Along the river's edge you can find river bottom hardwood trees, spring waterfalls and sheer vertical cliffs.
The Kentucky River was a source of livelihood for the Pleasant Hill Shakers and regular trading expeditions ventured as far as New Orleans. The same landing used by the Shakers is now the launching point for private river adventures of the Palisades.
Cache In Trash Out® (CITO) is an ongoing environmental initiative supported by the worldwide geocaching community. Since 2002, geocachers around the world have been dedicated to improving parks and other cache-friendly places.
