Geocache Description:

The Allen David Broussard Catfish Creek Preserve State Park is located along the beautiful Lake Wales Ridge and covers more than 8,000 acres of scrub, sandhill, flatwoods, in addition to 65 acres of submerged land. The preserve offers six miles of hiking trails, seven miles of equestrian trails, a covered pavilion, fishing, and excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. When you visit the preserve, please make sure you are prepared for rugged conditions typical of scrub habitat. Bring plenty of water and be prepared for challenging trails at the park.

THINGS TO SEE: The preserve is home to numerous rare plants, such as scrub morning glory, scrub plum, pygmy fringe tree and cutthroat grass and several protected animal species including Florida scrub-jays, bald eagles, gopher tortoises and Florida scrub lizards. When you visit the preserve make sure you are prepared for the rugged conditions typical of the scrub habitat.

The park is open 8:00am to sunset, 365 days a year. Please note that while there is no hunting on the State Park property, there is a nearby gun range. The sounds of gun fire can be heard throughout the preserve.

Cache is placed with permission from Patrick Sullivan, DEP Park Services Specialist.

HIKE: 1.3 miles round trip (moderate to rugged hike due to hills and sugar sand)

This is a Letterbox Hybrid cache. For anyone not familiar with Letterboxing, there is a log in the cache for you to sign and stamp (with your stamp), then you stamp your own log or paper (with stamp that is in the cache). If you do not have your own stamp, then stickers or hand drawn artwork are acceptable or if you do not have your own stamp, you can just sign the log. DO NOT TAKE THE STAMP WITH YOU; IT IS NOT A TRADE ITEM!!!

This geocache is a part of the Trek Ten Trails 2022-2023 program. Participation in that program, while a lot of fun, is not required to log this cache.

New validation game cards that participants stamp are available at various locations and are listed on the Friends of the Parks website and OUTPOST 27 CACHE. Trek Ten Trails 2022-2023 program maps, game cards, and other information about each of the featured nature trails may be downloaded from the Friends of the Parks website.
