Who started Wordle?

Welsh engineer Josh Wardle created Wordle, naming it with a play on his own last name. Originally he created it for his partner, who loved word games, then sent it to his family’s group chat. Seeing the enthusiasm everyone close to him had for it, he eventually expanded it and opened it to the public.

What is Wordle?

Wordle is an online word-guessing game made up of a five by six grid, with a new mystery word for players to guess each day. The five squares across each represent a single letter in the five-letter word for the day and the six rows each represent one guess at what that day’s secret word is.

The game first came online on a bare-bones website in October, with fewer than 100 players trying it in the early days. By early January, 300,000 people played on any given day—and by the end of the month, millions.

How do I play Wordle?

Playing Wordle is currently free and easy—you just click through to the creator’s website and enter your first guess. Each guess must be five letters long and must be an English word. Once you type in your guess and hit enter, the letters will flip and any correct letters in the correct position within the word will turn green, while any correct letters not in the correct position will turn yellow.
