Well sort of. Around this area there is a ground layer called hard pan, and though it is not for cooking it can be hard like iron and tree roots have a hard time getting through it. It can be at the surface or several feet deep and can range anywhere from just rocks to a really large slab like concrete. Long ago when planting an orchard they would use tnt to blast through the hard pan. Now they just use rather large augers. I have had my share of trees get root bound as the tree roots could not get through it and after a few years the roots would just rot. Be careful as this intersection sometimes has some pretty crazy drivers,
