Βουλισμένο Αλώνι, Ηράκλειο, Κρήτη
Το Βουλισμένο Αλώνι είναι ένα μορφολογικό βύθισμα που δεν έχει καμία σχέση με πραγματικό αλώνι. Πρόκειται για μία κυκλική καρστική κοιλότητα (δολίνη), που λόγω του σχήματός της οι κάτοικοι της έδωσαν το όνομα "αλώνι". Το σπήλαιο σχηματίστηκε στα ανθρακικά πετρώματα της ενότητας της "Τρίπολης" και αποτελεί τμήμα ενός ευρύτερου υπόγειου δικτύου που συνδέεται και με την πηγή του Αλμυρού. Η συνεχής καρστική διάβρωση λέπτυνε την οροφή του σπηλαίου με αποτέλεσμα αυτή να καταρρεύσει από το βάρος της και να σχηματίσει την δολίνη. Σε πολλά σημεία τα πρανή έχουν κατακόρυφη έως και αρνητική κλίση με ύψος αρκετών δεκάδων μέτρων.
Το μνημείο είναι μοναδικό για την Κρήτη και οι επισκέπτες μπορούν εύκολα να το απολαύσουν μέσω ενός βατού μονοπατιού.
Δολίνη
Η δολίνη στη Γεωλογία είναι σχηματισμός κοιλώματος σε σχήμα λεκάνης, με κυκλικό ή ελλειπτικό σχήμα και ανήκει στις καρστικές μορφές. Οι δολίνες σχηματίζονται σε ανθρακικά ασβεστολιθικά ή δολομιτικά πετρώματα εξαιτίας της κατάρρευσης της οροφής υπογείων σπηλαίων ή της ασβεστολιθικής διάβρωσης από όμβρια ύδατα. Η δράση του νερού είναι κυρίως μηχανική και χημική. Η καρστική διάβρωση των ασβεστολίθων οφείλεται στη διαλυτική δράση του νερού, όταν περιέχει διοξείδιο του άνθρακος, [CaCO3+ CO2+ H2O -> Ca(HCO3)].
Ασβεστόλιθος
Ο ασβεστόλιθος είναι ιζηματογενές πέτρωμα, του οποίου το βασικό συστατικό είναι ο ασβεστίτης (CaCO3). Συχνά περιέχει απολιθώματα, από τα οποία μπορεί να εκτιμηθεί η ηλικία και η προέλευσή του. Η μεταμόρφωση του ασβεστόλιθου δίνει στο πέτρωμα εντονότερο κρυσταλλικό χαρακτήρα, σχηματίζοντας το μάρμαρο. Σε μεγάλες, αρχικά, συμπαγείς μάζες ασβεστολίθου παρατηρούνται κοιλώματα, σπήλαια, ποικίλα φλεβοειδή ανοίγματα, σχηματισμοί χύτρας κτλ. που οφείλονται στη διάβρωση.

Voulismeno Aloni
Voulismeno Aloni means a threshing floor in a depression but this is not what the area really is. The structure represents a karstic depression (doline) that was formed after the collapse of a cave ceiling, which was thinned enough by karstic erosion to become unstable and to collapse finally under its own weight. The circular shape of the doline led locals to name it threshing floor.
The cave was developed in the carbonate rocks of "Tripolitsa" unit as part of an extended cave-system which is also connected with Almyros spring. The doline has in several places very steep, almost vertical sides of several tens of meters in height. The monument is unique for Crete and can be easily visited through a well paved trail by all visitors.
Doline or sinkhole
A sinkhole is a depression or hole in the ground caused by some form of collapse of the surface layer. The term is sometimes used to refer to doline. Most sinkholes are caused by karst processes – the chemical dissolution of carbonate rocks, collapse or suffosion processes. Sinkholes are usually circular and vary in size from tens to hundreds of meters both in diameter and depth, and vary in form from soil-lined bowls to bedrock-edged chasms. Sinkholes may form gradually or suddenly, and are found worldwide.
The formation of sinkholes involves natural processes of erosion or gradual removal of slightly soluble bedrock (such as limestone) by percolating water, the collapse of a cave roof, or a lowering of the water table. Sinkholes often form through the process of suffosion. For example, groundwater may dissolve the carbonate cement holding the sandstone particles together and then carry away the lax particles, gradually forming a void.
Sinkholes are common where the rock below the land surface is limestone or other carbonate rock, salt beds, or in other soluble rocks, such as gypsum, that can be dissolved naturally by circulating ground water. Sinkholes also occur in sandstone and quartzite terrains. As the rock dissolves, spaces and caverns develop underground. These sinkholes can be dramatic, because the surface land usually stays intact until there is not enough support. Then, a sudden collapse of the land surface can occur.
Limestone
Limestone (calcium carbonate CaCO3) is a type of carbonate sedimentary rock which is the main source of the material lime. It is composed mostly of the minerals calcite and aragonite, which are different crystal forms of CaCO3. Limestone forms when these minerals precipitate out of water containing dissolved calcium. This can take place through both biological and nonbiological processes, though biological processes, such as the accumulation of corals and shells in the sea, have likely been more important for the last 540 million years. Limestone often contains fossils which provide scientists with information on ancient environments and on the evolution of life.
