Geocache Description:

Cacheferrata - a Team Vape project

Team Vape is excited to present this new project for our city "Grottaferrata". Our aim is to transform Grottaferrata into a geocaching friendly city, hiding different types of caches in several important places which are and have been part of Grottaferrata's history.

Piazza Cavour

An important and beautiful pedestrian space in Grottaferrata, Piazza Cavour is dedicated to the Italian politician and patriot, one of the proponents of the unification of Italy in 1861. This square is a community place and a meeting place for both citizens and tourists.

On one side, the square hosts a beautiful fountain in tuff and travertine, on the other the War Memorial, a statue made in 1917 by the sculptor Amleto Cataldi and financed by the Marquis Alfredo Dusmet, in memory of his brother Giovanni, killed in 1917 on the Piave river.

The sculptor Amleto Cataldi was born in Naples on November 2, 1882 from Angelo Cataldi, a poor wood carver who taught him his art, and Giuditta Alessandroni.

Father and son, in the early years of the twentieth century, moved to Rome, where they opened a small shop that Amleto, soon orphaned and with an infirm sister, continued to manage amidst the most serious difficulties; however, the young man pursued a sure vocation as a sculptor and, by attending exhibitions and museums, he took care of his own artistic training like Umberto Boccioni, Adolfo De Carolis, Arturo Dazzi, enrolling in the free school of the nude in Via Ripetta. Here he distinguished himself for his merits, inserting himself in the naturalistic trend and modeling his sculptures according to a classical ideal.

His official debut took place in 1907, when he obtained a prize at the exhibition of Amateurs and Connoisseurs of Fine Arts with a group entitled "L'ultimo gesto di Socrate" (The last gesture of Socrates). He gained good fame, which earned him important commissions. In June of 1909, a public competition was announced for the sculptural decoration of the piles and heads of the "Vittorio Emanuele II" bridge, where four sculptural groups were planned to represent the King's Virtues and four Victories: after various vicissitudes, the judging commission commissioned the sculptors Elmo Palazzi, Luigi Casadio, Amleto Cataldi and Francesco Pifferetti to carry out the works for the realization of the bronze Victories. The work was inaugurated on May 5, 1911 on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the unification of Italy.

Cataldi's career flourished from 1910. Both bourgeois taste and nationalist rhetoric, celebrating victorious wars and a new international role for the country, found in him one of the most gifted interpreters.

Grand Hotel Traiano

A vintage postcard with depictions of the different rooms of the hotel

The "Grand Hotel Traiano" was a historic hotel in Grottaferrata. It was a former retreat of the Italian national team and in the 1960s, players like Giovanni Trapattoni, Cesare Maldini and Gianni Rivera trained in the nearby Municipal Stadium and slept in this Grottaferrata's complex.

Unfortunately the hotel is closed at the moment due to the bankruptcy of a Libyan oil company that owned the lot. Over 10 years ago, the Lazio Region approved a project for the redevelopment of this area, together with other abandoned and dilapidated structures in Grottaferrata, such as the former covered market, located in Via Garibaldi. However, the works never started, and the intervention is still part of the public works program of the Municipality of Grottaferrata.

At the moment, only a few cultural associations in Grottaferrata are pushing for the rebirth of this important historic building.
