Some history and facts about Mountain Road Forest:
Habitat Acquisition Trust (HAT) and the CRD purchased the Mountain Road Forest property on November 29th, 2021. Nearly 50 acres of mature urban forest are now protected forever for people and wildlife alike.
The property contains second-growth coastal Douglas firs, a Garry Oak meadow, rock outcrop, and arbutus stands, all of which are some of Canada’s rare and most at-risk of being destroyed ecosystems. The property is home to several species-at-risk, including the Western Screech Owl and Common Nighthawk, and serves as part of the headwaters for the regionally-important Colquitz River system via Excelsior Creek.
The park is open from dawn to dusk. There have been the occasional cougar sightings recently and black bears frequent the area regularly. Please stay on the existing trails when visiting the park.
Rachael, from CRD Parks, has the UTM and has given permission for placement.
