Geocache Description:

CACHE IS NOT AT POSTED COORDINATES

This cache is part of a series to recognize Nebraskas' Sister Cities. Sister Cities International (SCI) is a national initiative begun by Dwight D. Eisenhower shortly after World War II, to develop economic, cultural and technical exchanges between US cities, counties, and states with corresponding communities worldwide.

Taiping, Taiwan is one of Lincoln, Nebraskas' sister cities. There is a Waymark listed that can show you where Taiping is if you are interested. The closest cache to Taiping is GC8J682. Taiping (meaning "Peace Island") is the largest island in the naturally occurring Spratly Islands in the South China Sea. Taiping Island is also called Itu Aba (meaning "What's That").

Itu Aba is admistered by Taiwan but aslo claimed by People's Republic of China, Vietnam, and the Phillipines. This island was named after a naval ship of the Republic of China's after it visited the island in 1946 after Japan surrended after it surrendered in WW2. There is a population of about 224, largely military, coast guard, and service personel. The temperature varies from 70-90 degrees fahrenheit thanks to it's tropical monsoon climate. It's rainy season is from November to December.

As far as tourism goes there is a temple on the island that is a common visiting place. There is a pillar erected on the island that declares Taiping as the Republic of China's. Old Japenese constructions can be found on the southeast side of the island and the Taiping Cultural Park is located near the pier.
