A nice big pull off area at the top of the hill, where there are great views to the east of historic Ruapekapeka Pa.
Ruapekapeka Pa is one of the largest and most complex pā in New Zealand; Ngapuhi designed it specifically to counter the cannons of the British forces.
If you have some time to spare, it is well worth making the short detour off SH1 to visit the site to learn about NZ's early history.
This cache here is best accessed whilst heading north, although it is a large layby area and with care, can be accessed while heading south also.
Cache is well away from the road, but please keep an eye on any juniour cachers, as SH1 is 100kmh in this area.
