Cache is located in Rutland state forest. . The gates to this area are locked in the winter requiring a 1 to 2 mile hike. When the gates are open you can drive to within 1/4 mile.
Rutland state forest is a large area with numerous dirt roads and trails for hiking. The mid-state trail runs through here. It is a popular hunting area, but I’ve stuck the roads during hunting season with no problems.
Cache is in the remains of a state minimum-security prison. It was closed as park of the quabbin project. Only a small cellblock and a root cellar are still standing. The foundations for the rest of the complex is scattered in the area, some well covered with overgrowth. Watch for loose rubble.
