Teuhtli: El Guerrero Olvidado

El Teuhtli es un volcán extinto, cuyo nombre proviene del náhuatl y significa "venerable señor". Desde su cima podrás apreciar una vista impresionante si el clima lo permite. ¿Sabías que Milpa Alta es el productor más grande de nopal del mundo?

La leyenda de los volcanes

Cuentan nuestros antepasados que en tiempos prehispánicos existió un gran guerrero que llevaba el nombre de Teuhtli. Este guerrero era muy famoso por combinar la fuerza y la fiereza en sus combates. Tezozómoc, señor de los tepanecas, le tenía tanto respeto que decidió prometerle la mano de su hija, Iztaccíhuatl, sin saber que ella estaba enamorada de otro gran guerrero cuya fama no era tan grande como la de Teuhtli. Este segundo guerrero se llamaba Popocatépetl.

Un día los tepanecas fueron atacados por un extraño pero poderoso enemigo. Durante la batalla, Teuhtli y Popocatépetl decidieron olvidar su rivalidad por el amor de Iztaccíhuatl y unieron fuerzas para proteger el reino, pero al ver que la derrota era inminente, Teuhtli le dijo a Popocatépetl que tomara a Iztaccíhuatl y huyera con ella.

Popocatépetl e Iztaccíhuatl huyeron por dos días, pero herida en la batalla, Iztaccíhuatl murió en las manos de Popocatépetl durante la segunda noche del viaje. En ese lugar en donde falleció su amada, Popocatépetl permaneció a su lado durante el resto de sus días, vigilando su cuerpo inerte hasta que la nieve fue cubriendo poco a poco los cuerpos de ambos personajes hasta formar los enormes volcanes que apreciamos hoy en día.

Por otro lado, Teuhtli siguió luchando con todas sus fuerzas hasta que fue herido de gravedad. Con sus últimas fuerzas, este guerrero intentó alcanzar a Popocatépetl e Iztaccíhuatl, pero la muerte lo alcanzó antes de que pudiera llegar a ellos. De su cuerpo inerte surgió un volcán, de donde brotan manantiales que desde entonces dan vida a todos los cultivos de los alrededores.

Sugerencias:

• Llevar botas y ropa cómoda que se pueda ensuciar.
• La subida es corta pero patinosa debido a piedras y tierra suelta. Se recomienda llevar bastones o un palo para apoyarse, más no es imprescindible.
• El Sol puede ser considerable al medio día, por lo que recomiendo llevar sombrero o gorra, bloqueador y agua. En las mañanas y en las tardes el clima es agradable. Durante las noches las temperaturas pueden bajar.

Teuhtli: The Forgotten Warrior

Teuhtli is an extinct volcano, whose name comes from the Nahuatl language and means "venerable lord". From its summit you will be able to appreciate a breathtaking view if the weather allows it. Did you know that Milpa Alta is the largest producer of "nopal" (edible cactus) in the world?

The legend of the volcanoes

Our ancestors tell us that in pre-Hispanic times there was a great warrior named Teuhtli, who was very famous for combining strength and fierceness in his battles. Tezozómoc, lord of the Tepanecas, respected him so much that he offered his daughter's hand. Unbeknownst to him, Iztaccíhuatl (his daughter) was in love with another warrior whose fame was not as great as Teuhtli. This second warrior's name was Popocatépetl.

One day, the tepanecs were attacked by a strange but powerful army. During battle, Teuhtli and Popocatépetl forgot their rivalry for Iztaccíhuatl's love and decided to join forces. After seeing that despite this act defeat was imminent, Teuhtli told Popocatépetl to take Iztaccíhuatl away from defeat.

These two characters ran for 2 days, but wounded in battle, Iztaccíhuatl died in the hands of Popocatépetl on the night of the second day. There where her beloved died, Popocatepetl remained guarding her body for the rest of his days. As time went by, snow started to cover their bodies, forming the giant volcanoes that rise to the east nowadays.

Teuhtli on the other hand fought with all his strenght until he was fatally wounded. With the last of his strength he tried to reach Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, but death reached him first before he could get close. From his inert body arose a volcano, from which springs surface and give life to all the surrounding crops.

Suggestions:

• Bring boots and comfortable clothes that can get dirty.
• The climb is short but slippery due to loose stones and gravel. I recommend bringing hiking poles or a stick, but it's not essential
• The Sun can be considerable at noon, so I recommend bringing a hat or cap, sunscreen and water. In the mornings and evenings the weather is nice, but at nights the temperatures can drop.
