In June 1778, George Washington’s 14,000 Continental Army engaged the British 20,000 Army in the Battle of Monmouth. This battle became the largest artillery battle in entire Revolutionary War.
The Sutfin Farmhouse got caught in the direct crossfire between the battle lines and took fire from both Continental and British troops.

The farmhouse structures is barley still standing today that witnessed this historic battle, unfortunately It’s falling apart, an eyesore smack in the middle of this pristine and historic battlefield. Monmouth Battlefield State Park, which contains three buildings that stood during the battle. The Sutfin farmhouse is the worst off of these three, currently fenced off. Only one-third of the house is original to the battle; the rest was added later.

With the 250th anniversary of American independence approaching, renewed attention is being trained on preservation efforts. A coordinated statewide push is underway to assist notable Revolutionary War sites with grants and fundraising. Monmouth Battlefield State Park is in certain need of restoration efforts before its lost forever.
