This cache has been placed to highlight one of the most prominent features of Devonport. If you make your way up to Mersey Bluff, you will find a high light standing on the hill, the Mersey Bluff Light house.
We hope that this cache will also be a highlight of your caching experience here in Tasmania .
The easiest way to access this cache is from directly in front of the lighthouse (see trailhead waypoint). There is no actual trail here but if you head out into the clearing you can see a relatively easy way down on the rocky area (MAY BE SLIPPERY WHEN WET) This will take you to a large rock shelf. NO NEED TO GO NEAR THE EDGE OR THE WATER.
The Mersey Bluff lighthouse was officially opened on 2 September 1889. It was de-manned in 1920 following its conversion to automatic electric operation. The picture below is from around 1910. The vertical red stripes you can see today (unusual for an Australian lighthouse), were originally painted in 1929.
