MY PRIVATE IDAHO - WISDOM OF
THE ANCIENTS
"Master, I don't
understand why people can't live by simple rules that help us
all get along" "You have much to learn young Grasshopper.
People today think that we have learned much more than our
ancestors. They think our ancestors were ignorant when it came
to the problems and needs of mankind." "But master they were
often cruel and individual freedoms were repressed, people
were not free like they are today. Still I do not see how this
applies to my original question." "Ah Grasshopper you are wise
for one so young. The question you asked does not have a
simple answer. You see, wisdom doesn't change with time. For
as long as man has lived the problems and answers to life have
been the same. Our wisdom has been passed down through the
ages and teaches us the solutions to these fundamental
problems. Technology has given us new tools and the ability to
do things that our ancestors could not do, yet wisdom is not
increased by technology." " I don't understand, Master" "Ahh
Grasshopper, but you try to understand, and so with time, you
shall. You see knowledge and wisdom are not the same.
Knowledge is only a tool. The person that wields the tool can
do good or cause harm. Wisdom is what guides the use of
knowledge for good." "But Master! How does this tell me why
people can't follow rules?" "Young Grasshopper, sometimes I
forget that you are but an apprentice. The larger answer I
gave, answers many smaller questions. However to answer your
single question you need to know that one thing people have
come to know in the modern world is that they have the right
to self gratification. Wisdom teaches us that you must respect
others. This respect is one form is called the golden rule.
Your studies will teach you that much of the very foundation
of civilization is built upon this rule. Further most laws
that nations choose to enact are built upon how we should show
respect to others and they provide punishments for when we
don't. When a person values their own pleasure more than they
respect other human beings they will not follow rules. They
will make their own rules and decree that they are good. They
will show disrespect and not understand the hypocritical
nature of what they demand. For if someone were to show them
disrespect in the same fashion it would take away from their
pleasure and they would bemoan the pitiful state of society."
"Grasshopper, there is good and evil in the world. Evil can be
subtle. What you asked about a small evil. But it is an evil
nonetheless." "So Master, you are telling me that people who
do not follow the rules are selfish?" "Yes Grasshopper I am.
You have learned well to summarize my long lesson so
concisely. This is enough for today, Let us retire to the
meditation chamber that we may become enlightened by the video
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon."
