On the way to Adventure labs at the upper end of the Samaria Gorge, between the Botanical garden and the village of Lakki, we came across a monument dedicated to the cyclist Agrimaki Emmanouil (1980-2018), also known as Manolis. The monument is in a place with a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains and consists of two large stones with commemorative plaques. One stone is inscribed in memoriam to Manolis, on the other is a stylized picture of a cyclist. The rural cemetery can be seen in the valley in the vista between the stones. Perhaps Manolis is buried there.
We created this cache from day to day and did not find more details when writing listing. However, we knew that Manolis and this beautiful place deserve the cache. The cacher redgecco helped us right after cache publishing, thank you. If any of you can provide us with additional information, we would be happy to add it to the listing. We would like to add a waypoint to the grave of Manolis and a waypoint to the spot where the cyclists planted two trees in memory of Manolis (it is near the crash site).
Manolis Agrimakis was a bicycle enthusiast and had obtained medals and cups from various participations in cycling races in Crete and he also ran the café in Chania.
Manolis lost his life during his favorite training on March 24, 2018. He died at the age of 36 when his bike was hit by an agricultural car on the road in Lakkos Omalos.
The monument was erected by the Chania Cycling Club and was unveiled in a ceremony in 2019. It serves as a tribute to Manolis' love of cycling and his contributions to the sport in the region. It is also a reminder to drivers to exercise caution and to be mindful of cyclists sharing the road.
