Geocache Description:

Ocean County Historical Series #1 - The Start of Your Trip.  The area was known as Pelican Shoals due to the amount of Pelicans that would inhabit the island in the summer.  In early days it was used as a pasture for the dray horses that pulled the 'pound' boats up the beach when the fishermen came in from pound fishing in the ocean.  The island was eventually developed in 1924 by the Sunset Island Improvement Company and was called Sunset Island.  Eventually the name reverted back to Pelican Island.  The entire island was under a few feet of water during Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
