Geocache Description:

St Edmund's Church

St Edmund’s Church is dedicated to Edmund, King of East Anglia.

In AD870, the Danes invaded King Edmund’s kingdom of East Anglia and despite his best efforts, he was outnumbered and captured at Hoxne in Suffolk.

The Danes offered him his life and kingdom if he would agree to rule East Anglia as a deputy and worship Odin rather than Christ.

Edmund refused the offer and found himself beaten, whipped and tied to a tree. He was eventually beheaded but not before being target practice for a number of archers. He is noted to have passed away 20th November 870.

Although he was originally buried in Hoxne, his body was later enshrined in a monastery at
Beodericsworth, later to become known as Bury St Edmunds in the 10th century.

I would encourage you to have a look around the Church if it is open. There are some lovely stained glass windows.

To find the cache, go to the posted coordinates and look for the tall gravestone with a cross and broken anchor, in memory of a greatly beloved Admiral.
