St Mark’s Church

St Mark’s Church was designed by well known architect Percy Stone, utilising locally made red brick and stone.
It might surprise you that there are two churches in the Parish of Wootton with St Edmund’s church a short walk away. The reason is that when St Mark’s was built, it was technically in the Parish of Arreton. It was in 1925 that the Diocesan authorities make the decision to amalgamate the Parishes as a cost saving measure.
St Mark’s church suffered roof damage from bombing during the war and in fact from 1946 through to 1969, the church became a furniture store. Many of the original features and furnishings were lost from the church with the font being given to Bermondsey and the organ ending up in America.
It was reopened as a church in 1970, this being a condition of the Revd George Rayner taking up the post of Rector at the Parish. There was then a sustained campaign for St Mark’s to be consecrated; this was finally achieved in December 1984.
If you walk past the church hall to the rear of the church, you might spot an indoor skate club being utilised by some of the younger residents of Wootton.
To find the cache, first visit the foundation stone at the front of the church.
