Kaulana Manu (Famous Bird) Nature Trail is conveniently located at mile marker 21 of Saddle Road. It features a concrete bird watching platform that overlooks a kipuka (forested area surrounded by lava flows.) From this vantage point, many of the "famous birds" of Hawaii can be seen and heard. You might even get a glimpse of the iconic I'i'wi (Scarlet Hawaiian Honey Creeper.) You will know him by his bright red color and signature curved yellow beak.
There is also a 0.6 mile loop trail through the kipuka. Kaulana Manu has paved parking and indoor toilets. The bird watching platform is handicap accessible. Look for the interpretive signs that will help you identify and learn more about these beautiful feathered celebrities.
