Kaulana Manu ("Famous Bird") Nature Trail was opened to the public in November 2020. It showcases a small kipuka that is home to a number of species of endemic and endangered Hawaiian birds. A kipuka is an area of land surrounded by lava flows. In this case, a small ohia forest provides food and shelter for native flora and fauna.
An enchanting 0.6 mile wildflower lined path loops through the kipuka. A treasure trove of interpretive signs and name plaques will keep you educated and informed along the entire way. There is even an elevated observation deck that offers stunning views of Mauna Kea. Interpretive panels list fun facts about the world's tallest mountain.
