#33 The Dogliest Detective and the Case of the Poker Train
At 5:00 am Toby found himself in the conference room of the Alaska Railroad Authority, picking from a selection of donuts and muffins. He had been promised a Chai Tea, but that had to be sent out for.
Toby had been summoned by one of the senior partners of the Detective Agency. Oddly, the only other people here were plain-clothed Railroad Police officers.
Anthony effusively thanked Toby for coming, but then casually mentioned that this work was "off the books", but also that he would be "well compensated" for his work.
"We need your help, Toby, but we don't have much time. Yesterday somebody robbed the Poker Train of a very large amount of money, and the suspects will soon be getting on airlines to leave town."
Toby had not had his daily caffeine, so he could not be subtle. "I didn't see any Poker Trains on the schedule."
Anthony grinned and rolled his shoulders. "Well, let's just say it is a special service the Railroad provides to certain wealthy world travelers on the cruise ships to pass their time in the train rides to and from Denali. It is an extra railcar on special runs."
"We are pretty sure that an imposter got into the Poker Train and committed the theft. We have reviewed surveillance tapes and identified four suspects we think have lied in their back stories about their world travels." He then showed Toby some video clips.
Mr. Gondorff said that he was once on a cruise ship that sailed from east to west through the Panama Canal and exited into the Atlantic Ocean.
Mr. Hooker said that he has cruised around the world twice and once spent a week on a cruise ship in the Suez Canal when another ship was stuck in a canal lock.
Mr. Lonnegan said that he had been on a large cruise ship that traversed through a canal in Alaska.
Mrs. Singleton said she has never been seasick, and had once toured the Erie Canal on a boat that floated above and over rivers and streams.
Toby tried to get his mind to concentrate on the mystery, but it was still half asleep. Only after his chai tea arrived -- a grande size -- that his tail started wagging. "If I help you, I want to ride in one of those trucks with modified wheels that run on the railroad tracks."
Anthony chuckled and said "Done."
Toby pressed his luck and added. "And I want to drive the locomotive for a while."
Anthony chuckled. "Sure. Ask around. I know how to return a favor."
Toby said. "OK. I can tell you if you are looking for lies in their backstories, you should look further into ______."
