The Hub Market grocery store
The HUB opened in 1951 and moved to this site in 1966. If you were a local or visiting for the weekend it had all your grocery needs and then some! I remember walking into the HUB on a Saturday or Sunday morning and the treat of freshly made donuts your olfactory senses experienced was nothing less than intoxicating.
The HUB was a Houghton Lake landmark. Business was starting to decline for the Moore family with the introduction of the Walmart Super Center in 2003 as well as the introduction of Walgreen's in 2007. The doors finally closed in March of 2011.
If you stand at ground zero long enough try to image the ghostly scent of cinnamon, sugar and fried dough heavily swirling through the air.
Side Note:
The Moores also owned Surplus (the one stop shop for all your vehicle, snowmobile or watercraft needs) across the street and Archie Moore could be found there to share a Houghton Lake story or two with you if you were interested. The Surplus business closed in September of the same year, the day after Archie died at the age of 100 on September 22, 2011.
