The back story to this unique and lovely memorial park is very, very interesting. Branhilda Richardson Knowles Memorial Park and Historic Cemetery is dedicated to the many African American residents who were buried here in the late 1800s and was in use until 1950. There are no graves or markers and no one really knows where all the graves are now. In 2015, the city purchased the land to preserve it after archaeological investigation showed signs of human remains. At the park, conch shells serve as a reminder of the original markers. There are statues, art work and other beautiful objects that pay tribute to Ms. Knowles, a midwife who delivered many, many babies in the early 1900s along with a tribute to the branches of the US military and to fallen soldiers. Visitors can play chess at stone tables inlaid with chess boards or just enjoy the native landscaping geared towards attracting butterflies.
Parking is on the west and north sides of the park. Please bring a pen or pencil and enjoy this little park.
Congrats to Ikolor and Radioman for being FTF. Ikolor is right, there was another cache here but it kept going missing and then the landscaping where it was hidden was severely cut back. I thought it was too interesting a location not to refresh the hide!!
