On this day 100 years ago Lord Carnarvon died...mysteriously?
To celebrate the life of one the world's greatest treasure hunters you are invited to meet at his burial ground for an event on Beacon Hill from 7pm to 8pm, Wednesday, 5th April 2023.
Do note reaching Beacon Hill involves a stiff climb. Feel free to exchange Trackables and stories of your greatest geocaching finds.
Lord Carnarvon spent much of his later life as a treasure hunter. He financed many excavations in Egypt in the early 1900s with the stunning find of King Tutankhamun's tomb in the Valley of the Kings in 1922. Less than two months after the opening of Tutankhamun's burial chamber Lord Carnarvon was dead, at 56. On 19th March 1923 Lord Carnarvon suffered a mosquito bite on the neck which became infected after shaving. He died at the Continental-Savoy Hotel at Cario on the 5th April from blood poisoning.
The press at the time fuelled the story that it was the "Curse of Tutankhamun" or the "Mummy Curse" that was the cause of his death. Even the author, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stirred up the story by suggesting there was element of truth in this.
Lady Almina Carnarvon had his body transported back to England. He was buried on Beacon Hill over-looking his family seat of Highclere Castle.
Lord Carnarvon missed witnessing the opening of the inner shine of Tutankhamun by nearly a year. All being well, we will celebrate that 100th anniversary with an event on the 3rd January 2024.
