Geocache Description:

JBECK2 GOES MEDIEVAL ON CARW2023

Continued Misadventures of Jbeck2 - the Newbie Geocacher

Since I was fired from my last job for some reason (designing guidance systems for weather balloons for some overseas company) I’ve had some time on my hands, so I decided to post a cache for CARW2023.

Since this year CARW2023 is supposed to be a Medieval theme, I decided to really try to come up with a cache true to form, and a nice simple puzzle for people to solve.

Here’s what I came up with…

The Container:

In Medieval times, wealthy people prized gold items for some reason - presumably since Geocoins had not been invented yet. Since this is a very uncommon camo colour, I didn’t have an appropriate container.

I went to the mall looking for something gold. (And waterproof, lest I incur the wrath of Bubba da Darter again). As luck would have it, I found a shop that had many such gold waterproof items available. They seemed a bit pricey, and since I was between jobs, I just grabbed one and ran.

Fortunately, the mall muggles were not able to catch me before I made it to the parking lot, leapt into my Jeep, and sped off. I brought the strange item home, and with a few deft blows of a hammer managed to fashion a wonderful container. (I even added a handle on the back to help unscrew it)

The Hide:

Since this was a CARW puzzle, I wanted a super easy hide. I just put it in a tree about waist height. I put it on the East side of the tree facing away from the roads - after all this one might be a candidate for the “Most Likely To Be Muggled” award this year…

The Puzzle:

Apparently in Medieval times, tournaments were held whereby combatants would whack at each other with swords (presumably since hockey sticks had not been invented yet), and would proudly display their identification symbols on brightly painted shields (presumably because hockey jerseys had also not been invented yet)

I decided to make a simple puzzle featuring these shields…

First, I “encoded” the Northing, cleverly hiding the coordinates within the shields. Hint – it starts with “53”.

Then I “encoded” the Westing, once again cleverly hiding the…

Ummm… Uh oh.

For some reason the muggle police are at the door again. I better go see what they want.

I’ll be right back… I hope.
