ARAGONIENSE
¡Hola, Earthcacher! Me llamo Aragoniense y soy una edad geológica. Mi padre, el periodo Neógeno, me engendró con su primera esposa, mi madre Mioceno. Juntos tuvieron hasta 10 hijas: mis 9 hermanas y yo. Pero no todas vivimos a la vez, ni en el mismo ambiente. Algunas vivían en pisos marinos mientras que otras lo hacíamos en pisos continentales. Yo nací en cuarto lugar. Mis hermanas mayores fueron Aquitaniense, Burdigaliense y Rambliense. Las dos primeras vivían en zonas marinas. Rambliense, como yo, habitaba en tierra firme. ¡Le daba miedo el agua!
Sí, ya habrás adivinado que yo viví hace mucho tiempo. Hace 16,7 millones de años, cuando mi hermana Rambliense estaba a punto de fallecer, mi madre Mioceno decidió tener otra hija terrestre y mi padre Neógeno, no se pudo negar. Viví 5,6 millones de años, hasta el nacimiento de Vallesiense, a la que sucedió nuestra hermana Turoliense. A ella sucedió Alfambriense, también nacida en Aragón, pero ésta era hija de la segunda esposa de Neógeno: Plioceno.
Yo no estaba sola en la Tierra. Durante mis años de existencia coincidí con cuatro de mis hermanas marinas: Burdigaliense, Langhiense, Serravalliense y Tortoniense. ¡Menuda familia! ¡No hay quien se aclare! Por eso, te pondré este árbol genealógico o geológico, como lo llaman ahora, lo hizo Enrique Gil Bazán, un paleontólogo muy curioso que sabe muchas cosas sobre mí:
Distribución cronoestratigráfica de los pisos del neógeno. Los números indican el inicio de cada uno de ellos de manera aproximada. Los pisos que aparecen en negrita tienen toponimia aragonesa.
La verdad es que a mí no me conocía nadie hasta que en los años 70 del pasado siglo, unos geólogos holandeses visitaron algunos barrancos de la localidad de Villafeliche, cerca de Daroca, en la provincia de Zaragoza, y encontraron fósiles de pequeños mamíferos de la familia de los cricétidos, emparentados con los hámsteres, ratas campestres y lemmings. Allí observaron algo que no habían detectado en otros lugares y se dieron cuenta de que en el estrato que me define, había restos de un pequeño caballo que tenía unos dientes molares con la corona pequeña y, en lugar de las actuales pezuñas, tres dedos. Eso les llevó a mi descubrimiento. ¡Y luego vieron que había Aragoniense por toda la Europa continental! ¡Qué alegría me di! Por fin, alguien me encontraba.
Mi periodo de vida se relaciona con una temperatura más elevada que la actual. Veníamos de un periodo muy cálido y todo se iba enfriando poco a poco. Por eso, la vegetación fue cambiando. Cuando yo nací, había bosques abiertos y la zona en la que te encuentras ahora era como una inmensa sabana de esas que ves en los documentales sobre África. Luego, con el enfriamiento y el aumento de la humedad, aparecieron algunos bosques tropicales. ¿Te imaginas elefantes y leones correteando por el Paseo de la Independencia? Pues hacia esa imagen nos encaminamos, si continúa el calentamiento global… ¡Corre, corre, que nos pillan!
Al final de mi existencia, mis queridos caballos de tres dedos y muelas pequeñas, fueron sustituidos por otros équidos que tenían los molares más grandotes, los llamaron Hipparion y yo… dejé de existir. Pero muy cerquita, en la Cuenca del Vallés, en Barcelona, nació mi hermana Vallesiense, ¡la que montaba el Hipparion!

ARAGONIAN
Hello, Earthcacher! My name is Aragonian and I am a geological age. My father, the Neogene period, fathered me with his first wife, my mother Miocene. They had up to 10 daughters: my 9 sisters and me. But not all lived at the same time or in the same environment. Some lived on marine floors while others lived on continental floors. My older sisters were Aquitanian, Burdigalian and Ramblian. The first two lived in marine areas. Ramblian, like me, lived on dry land. He was afraid of water!
I’m sure you may have guessed that I lived a long time ago. 16.7 million years ago, when my sister Ramblian was about to pass away, my mother Miocene decided to have another continental daughter and my father could not refuse. I lived during 5.6 million years, until the birth of Vallesian, which succeeded our sister Turolian. She was succeeded by Alfambrian, also born in Aragon, but she was the daughter of Neogene's second wife: Pliocene.
I was not alone on Earth. During my years of existence I lived with four of my marine sisters: Burdigalian, Langhian, Serravallian and Tortonian. What a family! This is a mess! So, I will draw my family tree, also known as geological time scale. It was done by Enrique Gil Bazán, a very curious paleontologist who knows many things about me:

The truth is that nobody knew me until the 70s of the last century. Some Dutch geologists visited some ravines in the town of Villafeliche, near Daroca, in the province of Zaragoza, and found fossils of small mammals of the family of cricetids, related to hamsters, country rats and lemmings. They also observed something that they had not detected in other places and realized that in the stratum that defines me, there were remains of small horses that had low-crowned molar teeth and, instead of the current hooves, three fingers. That led to my discovery. And then they saw there were Aragonian all over continental Europe! It was great and funny! Finally, someone found me!
During my life, the temperature was higher than nowadays. We came from a very warm period and weather was cooling down little by little. Therefore, the vegetation was changing. When I was born, there were open forests and the area where you are now was like a huge savannah like those you see in documentaries about Africa. Then, with cooling and increased humidity, some tropical forests appeared. Could you imagine elephants and lions running along Independence Avenue? Well, we are facing that picture, if global warming continues ... Let's go! Run! Or we’ll be hunted by them!
At the end of my existence, my beloved three-toed horses with small molars, were replaced by other equids that had larger molars, they are named Hipparion and... I passed away. But very close, in the Vallés Basin, in Barcelona, my sister Vallesian, the one who rode the Hipparion, was born!
