Geocache Description:

Romeo Romano Gardens is a hidden gem in one of the busiest and high traffic areas of Malta. This garden was initially a section of Palazzo Manoel, later renamed Casa Leoni, which was constructed by Grand Master Antonio Manuel De Vilhena in 1730. During his reign as Grand Master of the islands, he initiated various projects, including Fort Manoel in Gżira, Manoel Theatre in Valletta, and several buildings in Floriana. The vast garden that was once part of the palazzo was made accessible to the public as 'Romeo Romano Gardens' in 1977.

A calm oasis that brings tranquillity to an otherwise chaotic surrounding being only a few hundred meters away from one of the arterial roads in the country. It offers an opportunity to find calm and connect with nature for the whole locality, which is more critical than ever.

In light of this, a section of this garden that had been closed off to the public has been refurbished and just recently opened. The area included a disused sienja, a water-lifting mechanism installed in the 19th century to water the gardens, an underground bell-shaped water reservoir that connects to a unique irrigation system covering the entire garden, and several mature citrus trees. The renovation project included the restoration of these historical features and the garden walls, fountains, and pathways to create a safe and accessible space. The sienja and irrigation system were restored, and the water reservoir was cleaned and repaired to collect water.

During the restoration process the garden was modernized while preserving its Baroque style, which is distinguished by its walkways and fountains that are intricately carved from stone and attributed to the French military engineer, Francois de Mondion. To enhance the experience, benches, lighting, a raised deck area, and a children's play area were included.

Take a relaxed stroll through the beautiful Romeo Romano Gardens and embark on a treasure hunt. Explore the winding paths, admire the lush flora and fauna, and keep an eye out for the hidden cache waiting to be discovered. The gardens offer a serene and tranquil escape, perfect for a day out with family and friends. So put on your walking shoes and let the adventure begin!
