When the Oregon Normal School reopened in the Fall of 1911, it was under the watchful eye of President John Henry Ackerman. Earlier that year, he had traveled the country to recruit well-trained staff and convinced Thomas Higdon Gentle, who lived in Wisconsin, to become the Head of Training.
Gentle, his wife Carrie, and their 5 children moved to Oregon with 14 Jersey dairy cows, and purchased a home near the college with 162 acres of land, creating a farm they called Gentleacres. The house had been built in 1880 by descendants of Peter Butler who led the 1853 wagon train of settlers out from Monmouth, Illinois, and into this area.
President Ackerman was known for his strict rules, emphasizing discipline and respect for authority. In his own words, "Many things that could be permitted at home, under the care of parents, cannot be allowed here...contempt of authority, disobedience or insolence will be punished..."
Mr. Gentle, as his name would suggest, was a bit more liberal and kind-hearted which often put him in conflict with the more rigid members of the staff. Students, however, universally adored him. The 1917 yearbook was dedicated to him "as a token of thanks for the many deeds of kindness and the friendly interest toward all".
Despite being considered one of the best educators in the state and having 17 stellar years at ONS, Mr. Gentle was dismissed by then-President Landers for political reasons in 1928. The governor of Oregon would later publicly rebuke Landers and call for his resignation.
After leaving the Oregon Normal School, Mr. Gentle immediately took up a position at the University of Oregon, where he worked for 3 years until an injury forced him into retirement. Though retired, he continued to lecture around the state and to work on his farm alongside his eldest son James, who built the neighboring home that remains in the family today.
