Knights lived during a time called the Middle Ages which began about 1500 years ago. Knights were medieval gentleman-soldiers, usually high-born, raised by a sovereign to privileged military status after training as a page and squire. The young squire learned about how to be a knight through an apprenticeship by going with his master to war, carrying his shield, putting on his armour before the battle, looking after his horses. The resources needed for horses, armor and weaponry meant that knighthood was generally a job for the rich. Knights usually came from noble families rich enough to pay for their training. Success in battle might lead to a royal grant of additional land and titles. A knight was supposed to show prowess (bravery, strength and skill in battle), respect women, defend the weak and the poor, be generous to others, and be loyal to his lord, his lady, his family and his friends.
