My favourite dinosaur is not a T-Rex… nor a Brachiosaurus… nor a Pteranodon. It’s the Irritator! This is no joke. The Irritator is a genus of dinosaur that roamed the Earth during the Early Cretaceous period, about 110 million years ago. It was a theropod, a group of bipedal carnivorous dinosaurs that included the more famous Tyrannosaurus Rex and Velociraptor. The Irritator, as its name might suggest, was actually named after the irritation of paleontologists who found its fossilized remains mixed with debris from a fossil collector's excavation. It turns out that the collector had glued some bones together and tried to pass them off as a new species of dinosaur, causing no small amount of frustration and annoyance among the scientific community. When the fraud was discovered, the paleontologists decided to name the dinosaur after the annoyance it had caused them, hence the name "Irritator". It's almost as if the paleontologists were saying, "We may have been fooled, but at least we got the last laugh by giving this little dinosaur a name that reflects our feelings towards the fraudster!" Despite its somewhat comical origin, the Irritator remains an important discovery in the field of paleontology, providing new insights into the diversity and behavior of theropod dinosaurs during the Early Cretaceous period.
