Geocache Description:

The facts: Whitehall (originally named Skenesborough) was founded by British Army Captian Philip Skene in 1759.  Skene was granted the 25,000 acres of land from King George III and developed several mills, a forge, roads and waterways which created a bustling trade hub.   In May of 1775 while Skene was on a trip back to England, Skenesborough was captured by Rebel forces led by Benedict Arnold and Ethan Allen.  By the end of May the Rebels had gained complete control of Lake Champlain and captured four vessels renaming them: LibertyEnterpriseRoyal Savage, and Revenge.  Skenesborough then became the site where the Rebels expanded their fleet and built 13  vessels which were later used in the 1776 Battle of Valcour Island.

Because of these Revolutionary War events, New York State Legislature deemed Whitehall, NY the "Birthplace of the United States Navy" in 1960.  However, the U.S. Navy does not recognize this as those operations were under the authority of the Continental Army.  Womp, womp.

The Cache:  There is ample parking near the cache site.  GZ is assessible by several sets of stairs and paths that run through the Skenesborough Waterfront Park.  On a nice day with time I suggest you explore all the park has to offer!  However, if you are short on time, this can be a quick grab for any seasoned cacher.  Cache is a small lock 'n lock with enough space for small swag items and trackables.  Please replace the cache as you found it for the next cacher to enjoy!

Grats to jbrannock44 for FTF on 2/25/23!
