There must be a sensible historical reason why the quietest street in the village is called Town Street (which I always associate with a Town Centre). I suspect that it may tell us something about the early history of the village. A "tun" is an old Anglo-Saxon term for a settlement (Holmpton is therefore Hom's or Holm's settlement). If that is right, this suggests that along here - or at the end of the road - was the original Anglo-Saxon settlement - probably stockaded given the risk of seaborne raiders.
It does however make for a very pleasant stroll, whatever the source of the name.
