Welcome to a stunning view of the east end of Kachemak Bay! East End Road rises to over 1400 feet above sea level here along the north side of Kachemak Bay, giving you a vista across the water to Dixon and Portlock Glaciers. There are no pullouts or wide shoulders along the road coming out to this location, so avoid temptation to stop and snap a photo enroute to here. This spot has a small turnaround spot next to a group of utility poles, just large enough for several vehicles if drivers are considerate enough to leave room for others. Each season has its own remarkable elements in the views from here, but my favorite time is during mid to late summer when the extensive fields of fireweed are in bloom.
Exercise caution driving on this excellent but narrow paved road, as you'll be distracted by the absolutely fabulous views while local residents are hustling along to and from their regular activities. Beyond this location are several small villages populated mostly by traditional Old Believer Russians, with no commercial services in the area.
