Geocache Description:

  • Find the special icon to stamp your notebook and/or sign the log.
  • This interesting shaped traffic island is actually a memorial garden dedicated to commemorate John Job Crew Bradfield (1867-1943), the famed Chief Civil Engineer who designed and oversaw the building of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
  • His last residence was nearby in Park Avenue, and he is buried at the St John's Church, Gordon.
  • He was ahead of his time and envisioned his designs of roads and rail network to withstand the growth for a multi million populous modern city that Sydney has become today.
  • Special mention of the talented Kathleen Butler (1891-1972) in this history of Sydney. She was appointed by Bradfield as his Confidential Secretary (essentially the senior project manager). She managed the international tendering process, travelling to London in 1924 and oversaw all the technical plans. She was nicknamed "The Bridge Girl" and “Godmother of Sydney Harbour Bridge".
  • Another great tale in the history of the Sydney Harbour Bridge is about a 9 year old youngster Lennie Gwyther and his pony Ginger Mick. As a reward for his hard work on the family farm, his dream was fufilled to attend the Opening of the Bridge on 19 March 1932. They travelled the 1000km journey solo from Leongatha, Victoria!
