文学碑は大きな二つの岩からなり、一つには「沈黙の碑」と刻まれ、もう一つには、遠藤周作がこの碑のために特別に著した文章を残しています。

遠藤周作は、小説『沈黙』に登場する架空の「トモギ村」のモデルの一つとして、江戸時代に大村藩が治めていた黒崎村を設定しました。これは現在の長崎市外海地区にある西出津町、東出津町、下黒崎町などにあたります。このうち、出津教会堂や旧出津救助院、ド・ロ神父記念館が点在する「出津文化村」の一角で、海をみおろす場所に文学碑があります。
昭和62年11月に、長崎市在住で遠藤の友人の尽力により「沈黙の碑」が建立されました。遠藤は、この地を「神様が僕のためにとっておいてくれた場所」と評し大変気に入っており、碑の除幕式後に、「あの碑と場所は私が思っていたとおりの場所で、とにかく私にとって、ベターではなくベストの文学碑」という言葉を残しており、この地に対する思い入れの深さをうかがい知ることができます。

The literary monument consists of two large rocks, one inscribed with the words "Monument of Silence" and the other with a text written especially for this monument by Shusaku Endo.

Shusaku Endo set Kurosaki Village, which was ruled by the Omura clan in the Edo period, as one of the models for the fictional "Tomogi Village" that appears in his novel "Silence". This corresponds to the present-day towns of Nishishitsu, Higashishitsu, and Shimokurosaki in the Sotome district of Nagasaki City. The monument is located in a corner of "Shitsu Cultural Village", which is dotted with the Shitsu Church, the Former Shitsu Aid Center, and the Father de Rotz Memorial Hall, and overlooks the sea.
In November 1987, the "Monument of Silence" was erected thanks to the efforts of a friend of Endo's who lives in Nagasaki City. Endo was very fond of this place, describing it as "a place God reserved for me." After the unveiling ceremony of the monument, he said, "The monument and the place are exactly what I thought they would be, and anyway, it is the best literary monument for me, not better. This shows the depth of his feeling for this place.
