Geocache Description:

Buttress Roots

Do you know why Moreton Bay Fig trees (which are native to eastern Australia) have those massive buttresses that can spread as wide as the tree’s height?

Because these huge trees grow in typically nutrient-deficient soils and so the roots need to spread out and search and gather more nutrients as well as support the tree so it doesn’t topple over.  The roots however are notably shallow for their size, which is typical of trees in nutrient-deficient soils in tropical and subtropical environments – ie there is no point going deep as there are no nutrients down there!

THE CACHE

Located in a prominent well known corner near the CBD of Port Macquarie, there is a massive example of a Moreton Bay Fig which in the past hosted a couple of caches placed near and amongst the root system.  The final of “Port Oddities – GC3N0CH” used to be there until Oct 2013 when it was muggled and then another cache was placed in the nearby bench seat, which had a troubled life until the Reviewer finally put it out of its misery after 4 months of neglect!

You are looking for a well camouflaged small plastic tube.

PARKING

Parking is a problem around this area.  The nearest safe area to park is in Hilltop Lane which is approx. 75 metres SW of GZ, however it is a one-way lane and you have to enter it from Hastings River Drive.  Or if you are feeling cheeky, you can park in a parking lot which is approx. 100 metres east of GZ.
