This park is called Big Cross, a great place for walking, cross country running, and disc golf. Look East from this spot and you'll see the Pasco airport, which is obviously a great modern way to reach Pasco. But before the airport there was a railroad, which is located just on the other side of the airport from here. Originally built at the end of the 19th century by the North Pacific Railway, its presence attracted more settlers to this area in the 1880's.
The Northern Pacific Railway continued to operate in the Pacific Northwest throughout the early 20th century, but it faced increasing competition from other transportation modes, including automobiles, trucks, and airplanes. The company struggled financially during the Great Depression and World War II, and in 1970 it was merged with several other railroads to form the Burlington Northern Railroad. That company, in turn, merged with Santa Fe Pacific Corporation in 1995 to form today's BNSF (Burlington Northern / Santa Fe), one of the largest freight rail transportation companies in North America.
