Pasco as an agricultural area has benefited from the Columbia Basin Project, the largest water reclamation project in the United States. This project, made possible by the Grand Coulee dam, supplies irrigation water to over 600,000 acres in central Washington. This water is pumped from the Columbia River into reservoirs and irrigation canals. This project has been successful in part because the soil of the Columbia Basin is fertile, but naturally receives little rainfall. Agriculture, such as the orchard seen across the street from this location, has played a major part in Pasco's economy over the years and helped shape its cultural identity into the town that it is today.
