This season each event is part of an alpha series of titles highlighting a term used in Geocaching. Today’s event is brought to you by the letter “R” for Reviewer.
REVIEWER – Volunteers who vet geocache listings to ensure they abide by the guidelines. Notice the word "Volunteers". Reviewers spend hours reviewing cache listings for content and location issues. Please be respectful of your local reviewer! Some reviewers cover multiple regions and states not just a local city or county. If you’re an experienced Geocacher who has some time AND has or is willing to learn all the rules of publishing a quality cache or event, you might consider volunteering to be a reviewer.
Our reviewer is Vertighost, who is extremely helpful and willing to give you tips to fix any issues with a cache or event you have submitted to be published. If you’re lucky you might get to meet Vertighost at an event.
How caches publish:
- Find a Location & check for any nearby caches – caches must be a minimum of 0.1 miles (528 feet/161 meters) apart from any physical stage or container.
- If on private property, obtain permission from the property owner to place the container.
- Take coordinates for the hide location. Walk away and test your coordinates. You may want to do this three times and even check them in Google Earth.
- Create or purchase the perfect container for the hide location, put a log page and, if space permits, some trade items and a pen or pencil and place it at your hide coordinate location.
- Write up your cache description, hint (optional), and give the cache a D/T rating. D for difficulty of the find and T for difficulty of the terrain. A 1/1 is wheelchair accessible, while a 1/5 is an easy cache to spot, but may require climbing or special equipment such as a kayak to retrieve.
- Submit your cache for publication and the reviewer will check it over and make it active if it meets the requirements.
