Geocats #2 Strand on the Green Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Southerntrekker: Hi There

As the owner has not responded to either my log or my colleague's previous log requesting that they check this cache I am archiving it.

Please note that once the cache has been archived, this can not be undone. This is explained in the Help Center - http://support.groundspeak.com//index.php?pg=kb.page&id=70

You will need to create a new listing, put it back in for review and as long as it meets today's guidelines and no other caches have been published in the area causing a proximity problem, then it will be published.

Regards

Geocache Description:

The Strand on the Green footpath runs along the bank of the river and is part of the Thames Path.  This part of the Thames is overlooked by some lovely 18th-century houses and local pubs, and, being a low part of the Tideway (which has been narrowed with embankments on both banks), the footpath is often flooded at spring tides. The District line and London Overground both cross the river on the railway bridge erected in 1869 between two of the local pubs.

The Seal sign was paid for by money raised after the death of Freddie, the seal which was attacked by a dog on a slipway at Hammersmith in March and subsequently died of its injuries. The attack made national news as a passing vet and other volunteers fought to save it.  Hammersmith, Richmond and Hounslow councils were all approached to ask for permission to put up signs along the river bank to inform people about the seals but Hounslow were the only ones who agreed to it.

Looking out over the river, there is a wonderful Thames Path National Trail sign which was installed in July 2018. The sign refers to the three historic pubs along the footway which were built in the late 1700s.  One of the pubs was featured in the Beatles film 'Help', and at another one, Oliver Cromwell reputedly held military councils during the English Civil War.  The sign also provides information on the wildlife of the area, notably birds, Canada Geese, Tufted Ducks and teal, and on the area's links with the painter Zoffany.
