西武鉄道の所沢駅は西武新宿駅と本川越駅を結ぶ新宿線と池袋駅から西武秩父駅を結ぶ池袋線の2つの路線が乗り入れています。
かつての川越鉄道（新宿線の前身）と武蔵野鉄道（池袋線の前身）が合併して西武鉄道となりました。
駅ビルは2020年に全面改装されて、さまざまな商業施設が入っており、また西口にはプロペ通りと呼ばれる商店街があり、駅周辺はとても賑わっています。
