Geocache Description:

On the night of February 10 or early morning of February 11, 1966, 18 year old Garry Heywood and 16 year old Abina Madill went missing after attending a rock concert in Shepparton. Their bodies were discovered a few days later near Murchison, they had been murdered. The morning after their disapearance, Garry Heywood's car, an FJ Holden was found parked at an odd angle near the Shepparton Lake. Heywood was a panel beater and loved cars. So for his car to be left as it was, was considered strange. An investigation began which included Garry Heywood's car being fingerprinted. Two fingerprints from that vehicle would prove critical to the investigation nearly 20 years later. The double murders rocked the large country town of Shepparton and the entire Goulburn Valley. Garry and Abina were workmates but they were not an item. Abina's boyfriend Ian Urquhart was interviewed several tiimes by police and the community soon realised he was a suspect. The police tried every tactic they could to get him to admit to murdering Garry and Abina but he didn't, because, he was in fact, innocent. The suspicion of him being the murderer by members of the community drove Ian away from Shepparton and he moved overseas. Sadly he was killed in a car crash in Singapore on the sixth anniversary of the murders.

The murders would go unsolved for almost two decades. In the 1970's and early 1980's a series of rapes took place in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, police dubbed the unknown offender The Donvale Rapist. Sergeant Andrew Wall, a Victoria Police fingerprint expert matched the fingerprints from the rape scenes in Melbourne with those found on Garry Heywood's car back in 1966. But these fingerprints were not on file so the offender was still not known.

In March 1985, Raymond Edmunds was arrested in Albury, NSW for indecent exposure and his fingerprints were taken. These fingerprints made their way to Sydney. Due to the seriousness of The Donvale Rapists crimes, the fingerprints had been sent to all Australian state's police fingerprint departments. Raymond Edmunds fingerprints were matched to those from the rape crime scenes and of course Garry Heywood's car by a Sydney police fingerprint expert. This is remarkable in itself but also is the fact that if Edmunds had committed the crime of indecent exposure just across the river in Wodonga, Victoria instead of Albury, NSW he wouldn't have been fingerprinted as that was not yet mandatory in Victoria. Edmunds nicknamed by the media as Mr Stinky due to one victim stating he had a peculiar body odour had been living and working on a farm at Ardmona, 10 minutes from Shepparton in 1966 when the murders took place. He was arrested, charged and convicted of the two murders as well as five rapes in Melbourne. He received two life sentences with no minimum term for the murders and 30 years for the rapes. There are many unsolved rapes in Melbourne from the 70's and 80's, some of which police believe Edmunds committed and maybe new DNA laws will discover the truth one day.

Garry Heywood, Abina Madill and Ian Urquhart are all buried at the Shepparton Public Cemetery.
