Fryeburg Fire Tower 🌲🔥🌲 Traditional Cache

Please park at the parking waypoint provided and then make the short trek to the cache. Other parking areas are available during the annual fair.

Dogs are welcome during the year, but must be leashed and they ask that you please pick up any waste. Dogs are not allowed on the fairgrounds during the fair.

This cache was placed with permission and will bring you to an interesting attraction on the grounds of the Fryeburg Fair, Maine's largest fair, in beautiful Fryeburg, Maine. The fairgrounds are open to walkers year round, however, you will need to pay a parking and entrance fee during the fair and possibly other events. On very rare occasions, the grounds are closed for private events.

A fire tower provides housing and protection for a person known as a 'fire lookout' whose duty is to search for wildfires in the wilderness. It is a small building, known as a view shed, and is usually located on the summit of a mountain or other high vantage point, in order to maximize the viewing distance and range. From this vantage point, the fire lookout can see smoke that may develop, determine the location by using a device known as an Osborne Fire Finder, and call fire suppression personnel to the fire. 

In 2008, this fire tower was built to replicate the one on Mt. Kearsage North near North Conway NH. During the fair, it is manned by experienced people who are happy to have visitors and answer any questions.
