The cache is located in Smith Mountain Lake State Park, Huddleston, VA. Be sure to visit the Visitor Center and Descovery Center to learn about the area's varied history. A trail map of the park's many trails can be acquired at the Visitor Center or trailhead kiosks. While visiting the park take advantage of the opportunity to hike, search for other geocaches, picnic, bike, camp and enjoy a variety of water related activities. Park in the lot at the Turtle Island Trailhead located on Interpretive Trail Road. The Turtle Island Trail will take you to within 15 yards of Gollum's Cavern.
Gollum is a character from the epic Middle Earth adventure, "The Lord Of The Rings". A Trilogy written by J.R.R.Tolkein. The trilogy is considered by many to be one of the greatest fantasies of all times. The character Gollum is descibed as a lonely, grayish, slimy, nasty creature who was five hundred years old, lived in caves, and ate fish and the flesh of goblins. Gollum was once a hobbit who killed his friend to gain possession of the all powerful "One Ring" which he refered to as "My Precious". The "One Ring" was the most powerful of all the evil rings and was sought after by the evil sorcerer, Sauron, to control all of Middle Earth.The "One Ring" corrupted Gollum's mind and changed him into the horrible creature known as Gollum/Smeagol.
Be forewarned-- Do not be tempted to place the all poweful "One Ring" on your finger. While it has the power to make you invisible it also has the power to corrupt your mind and bring the wrath of Gollum upon you.
