Geocache Description:

The cache is in the fenced in parking lot and you do not need to be near the train tracks.

Originally known as Whetstone Point, Locust Point is located at the southern end of the South Baltimore peninsula, bordered by the Patapsco River, which leads to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.

Established as a port of entry in 1706, this peninsula was renamed Locust Point in 1846, for the locust trees growing on the peninsula.

Locust Point has been called "Baltimore's Ellis Island" because the neighborhood was once the third largest point of entry for immigrants to the United States after Ellis Island and the Port of Philadelphia. From 1868 until the closure of the Locust Point piers in 1914, 1.2 million European immigrants entered Baltimore through Locust Point.

There are two Maryland Port Authority marine terminals located within the neighborhood, as well as the massive Domino sugar factory, a reminder that the industrial use of the Baltimore Harbor is still a very important component of the local economy.

Locust Point is noted as being the home to Fort McHenry but this location goes back to the start of our Country as it was built on the site of the former Fort Whetstone, which had defended Baltimore from 1776 to 1797.
