L'Oratorio della Beata Vergine presso le Porte Contarine è una piccola chiesa settecentesca, caratterizzata da un campanile in pieno stile rococò e da un corpo principale molto più elementare, dalla pianta rettangolare e dalla facciata semplice e limpida. Come si legge nell’iscrizione vicino all’ingresso, il tempietto è stato costruito nel 1723; nel 1839 divenne sede della Dogana austriaca e poi magazzino idraulico dopo l’Unità d’Italia, rischiando infine di venir demolita a fine Ottocento. Fortunatamente, come ricorda la targa, la chiesetta venne salvata dalla distruzione e restaurata nel 1968. Se volete vederne l’interno, fanno la messa ogni mercoledì alle 18.
Le Porte Contarine invece erano uno snodo fondamentale nella navigazione padovana, in quanto congiungevano il Naviglio Interno (purtroppo tombinato negli anni 50) al Piovego. Presso la chiesetta è possibile osservare ciò che rimane della Conca, costruita nel 1526 da Jacopo Dondi dell’Orologio (come dichiarato nell’iscrizione sul lato occidentale) al fine di agevolare il transito delle imbarcazioni: si tratta infatti di un punto con un grande dislivello idraulico, che è stato sfruttato anche per la costruzione, forse contemporanea o poco successiva, di un mulino a 4 ruote (oggi perduto).
La particolarità di questi due elementi architettonici è il fatto che sono gli unici ad essere antichi in un contesto completamente contemporaneo, fondendosi tuttavia in maniera armoniosa e suggestiva.

The Oratory of the Blessed Virgin at the Contarine Doors is a small eighteenth-century church, characterized by a bell tower in full Rococo style and by a more elementary main body, with a rectangular plan and a simple and clear facade. As stated in the inscription near the entrance, the small temple was built in 1723; in 1839 it became the seat of the Austrian Customs and then a hydraulic warehouse after the unification of Italy, finally risking being demolished at the end of the 19th century. Fortunately, as the plaque recalls, the church was saved from destruction and restored in 1968. If you want to see the inside, they have mass every Wednesday at 6pm.
The Contarine Doors, on the other hand, were a fundamental junction in Paduan navigation, as they connected the Internal Naviglio (unfortunately covered in the 1950s) to the Piovego river. At the church it is possible to observe what remains of the Basin, built in 1526 by Jacopo Dondi dell'Orologio (as declared in the inscription on the western side) in order to facilitate the transit of boats: it is in fact a point with a large difference in hydraulic height, which was also used for the contemporary or shortly after construction of a 4-wheel mill (now lost).
The peculiarity of these two architectural elements is the fact that they are the only ones to be ancient in a completely contemporary context, however merging in a harmonious and suggestive way.
