"On May 2, 2000, at approximately midnight, eastern savings time, the great blue switch* controlling selective availability was pressed. Twenty-four satellites around the globe processed their new orders, and instantly the accuracy of GPS technology improved tenfold. Tens of thousands of GPS receivers around the world had an instant upgrade.                                                                                                         "On May 3, 2000, in the woods just outside _________( city name? trivia question #2), Geocaching began  as                                  ___________  (hider's name ? trivia question #3) hid the FIRST Geocache."

UPDATE FROM GROUND SPEAK. 4 11 24

On May 2, 2000, the U.S. government “flipped the switch” and made accurate GPS available to all. Geocachers proudly call this day Blue Switch Day. We're launching a new souvenir to celebrate Blue Switch Day and the innovators who made it possible! This year, we highlight a GPS pioneer: Gladys West who worked for the U.S. Navy to develop accurate models of the Earth for satellites.
