"Captura em cotovelo" - o que é?

Tradicionalmente, o cotovelo de captura denota o ponto onde o curso do fluxo capturado foi desviado para o curso do fluxo captor. Geralmente, o cotovelo de captura denota uma curva acentuada no curso de um rio quase em ângulo reto (veja a imagem acima).

No entanto, o processo de captura do cotovelo também pode ocorrer quando você tem direções de mergulho regularmente espaçadas e relativamente semelhantes, que são interrompidas por falhas. Este CE leva você a ver esse exemplo.

A captura do cotovelo também pode ocorrer quando falhas ativas desviam o curso de um rio. No Marmeleiro, a alternância de camadas de rochas moles e duras faz com que os riachos fluam ao longo das camadas mais moles, onde o corte é mais fácil e rápido. Quando as camadas rochosas são inclinadas, a velocidade da água aumenta e o corte ocorre mais rapidamente. A falha na crista dos Marmeleiros faz com que o riacho se desloque para sul em vez de para oeste.

Geologia Local

O parque urbano das Penhas do Marmeleiro, localizado em Murches, fica no limite do Parque Natural de Sintra-Cascais, com uma vista soberba sobre a Serra de Sintra, a Peninha e também o Palácio da Pena.

Caracteristicamente, a geologia é dominada por camadas de calcário do Cretáceo Médio, algumas das quais criam cristas impressionantes, quase verticais.

Para registrar esta cache:

1.      No campo, a curvatura do rio não é tão acentuada como no “papel”. Existem duas pontes perto das coordenadas da cache. Caminha entre eles e diz-me se a ribeira mantém sua direção N-S ou muda. (responde sim ou não)
2.      Qual é a largura da ribeira na ponte mais a sul? (resposta em m)
3.      Para onde inclinam as camadas rochosas? (resposta N, S, E, W)

Elbow capture - what is it?

Traditionally, the elbow of capture denotes the point where the course of the captured stream has been diverted to the course of the captor stream. Generally, the elbow of capture denotes sharp turn in the course of a river almost at right angle (See image above).

However, the process of elbow capture can also occur when you have regularly spaced, relatively similar dipping directions that are disrupted by faulting. This EC, takes you to see such an example.

Elbow capture can also take place when active faults divert the course of a river. In MArmeleiro, the alternating sfot and hard rock layers cause the streams to flow along teh softer layers where cutting is easiest and faster. When rock layers are tilted, water velocities are increased and dowcutting occurs faster. The fault gap in the Marmeleiros ridges causes the stream to move south rather than west.

Local Geology

The Penhas do Marmeleiro urban park, located in Murches, is on the edge of the Natural Park of Sintra-Cascais, with a superb view over the Serra de Sintra,Peninha and also Palácio da Pena.

Characteristically, the geology is dominated by Mid-Cretaceous limestone beds some of which create impressive, almost vertical ridges.

1. In the field, the bend is not as sharp as it is on "paper". There are two bridges near the cache coordinates. Walk between them and tell me if the stream maintains its N-S direction or changes. (answer yes or no)
2. How wide is the stream at the southernmost bridge? (answer in m)
3. To which direction do the uplifted rock layers tilt? (answer N, S, E, W)
